The Chinese government created nearly 490m social media posts per year in attempt to distract the public from criticizing or questioning its rule. It is believed that China’s so-called “50c Party” (named so because of being paid 50 cents a post) has been flooding the local Internet with pro-regime publications designed to defend and promote the ruling Communist party.

However, it turned out that many of the posts were not published by ordinary citizens, but by civil servants: about 43,800 comments were analyzed to find that over 99% were the work of government employees from 200 agencies, including tax and social security and HR agencies. The researchers suggests that such posts usually appear in “bursts”, timed to coincide with politically sensitive periods, like the ruling party meetings, outbreaks of unrest and public holidays: for instance, lots of pro-Communist comments were published after the outbreak of deadly ethnic rioting in June 2013 and during a major political summit in November 2013.
According to documents leaked from a Chinese government propaganda office, about 50% of the propaganda messages appear on government websites, while the rest are fed into the Chinese social media networks which have about 700m Internet users.
It was previously believed that much of the online propaganda involved attacks on unwelcome ideas or the defense of government policy, but it turned out that most pro-party stooges do not engage in debate or argument at all. Instead, they are involved in cheer-leading and positive discussions, representing a strategy designed to actively distract and redirect public attention from ongoing criticism.
Could be worse China maybe subverting social media but in at least one so called secular country you can and will be killed for saying flying donkeys can't fly to the heavens .
