Muslim Reform Movement embraces secularism and universal human rights
A coalition of Muslim writers, activists and politicians has launched a "Muslim Reform Movement" rejecting violence and calling for a defence of secularism, democracy and liberty.
The reformers have issued a Declaration defending gender equality, freedom of speech and freedom of religion, stating that they are for "secular governance" and "against political movements in the name of religion."
They have called for the separation of "mosque and state" and emphatically reject the "idea of the Islamic state".
Activists from the group stuck their Declaration of Reform on to the front door of the Islamic Centre of Washington, a mosque the movement described as "heavily influenced by the government of Saudi Arabia".

Re: Muslim Reformists Embrace Secularism
This ties in nicely with what our nutbag former prime minister has said in the last two days. He's been calling for an Islamic reformation and enlightenment. Because he's an idiot of extreme order, and a bigot in general, he's been pilloried all around. But I tend to agree with him to an extent (I've been calling for similar things for years). The big fail in his argument is that he's a devote catholic and the catholic church never had a reformation, and struggles to conform with enlightenment principles. I think if he called it out for the catholics as well as Islam, he might have not been so ridiculed.

I hope these secularists didn't use their real names.

Yes, I read about his proposal myself. It was immediately poo-pooed by Turnbull and all the fashionable commentators, of course. The point to consider is that, although some form of Islamic reformation would probably be an excellent idea, it needs to come from within. To be exhorted to reform by someone with a fairly militant christian viewpoint is not going to achieve anything other than getting their backs up...rEvolutionist wrote:This ties in nicely with what our nutbag former prime minister has said in the last two days. And good point about Captain Catholic ironically calling for a Reformation. Loyola is spinning in his grave...

Re: Muslim Reformists Embrace Secularism
I'm all for Islamic reformation.
A new branch of Islam is just what we need. Shia's agains Sunnis was never enough war.
The reformists can bring a whole new kind of conflict that nobody has thought of yet. Not just three-way wars, either.
You can have the Shia reformists fighting the Reformed Sunnies.
Belfast all over again. You know it makes sense !!

One of the other schisms will likely plant a bomb at their conference and turn them into another radical element. They all begin with sweet words. Not in the fray yet.mistermack wrote:I'm all for Islamic reformation.
