Utah considers resuming firing squad executions

A traditional firing squad is not painless, any more than hanging was, or beheading. The Chinese method, with a bullet to the back of the head would be painless (but very messy), but not a firing squad which puts bullets into the chest, leaving the poor bastard in absolute agony for maybe 15 seconds, until blood loss to the brain makes him unconscious.

The best expedient is to lock them up for life, rather than the barbaric and vengeful approach of execution. However, if execution is what they insist on, then a better approach would be to use the same drug vets use to put animals 'to sleep'. It is a narcotic, and in underdose makes you feel really good. In overdose, simply sends the victim to sleep, for ever.

Cost should be a deciding factor. Why not burial alive? Execution and burial all in one package? Especially if it was someone who'd done something truly awful. Won't deter in all cases however some might say one case is enough on that score.
