Re: arrest warrant for ex-leader
I've been hearing some ugly things from a few online chums in the region. Seems to me they've got more of a regional almost feudal mentality and each comprises of at least three different influential political group, from staunch and rather iffy nationalists who lean towards the west, some centrist groups heavily influenced by their churches and the old Russian loyalists. Much of the so called "revolt" has actually been violent response to violent actions which are separate from the other protests. So in short another mess.

Re: arrest warrant for ex-leader
Not the end.
They just said, on the news, that the armed police squads, who were shooting at the protesters, have been disbanded.
This sounds unhappily like Iraq, where they disbanded the army after the war, and lost all control of those people, and left them with nothing to be loyal for. Widely accepted as one of the biggest mistakes made, in that conflict.
What are those squads going to do now? Stupid move. It's not looking good.

I have no doubt the men will be integrated in the regular police or army, leaving that kind of people with no livelihood is just too dangerous.

Oh, this is interesting.
I hear about a third of the Ukrainian opposition is Heil Hitler loving and Jew / Russia / Communist hating.

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

About as much as Poland. Split Poland too?mistermack wrote:Who would it harm? Ukraine doesn't have much of a history as an independent country anyway.
Ossetians are "ethic russians" now? That doesn't seem to be how Russia treats the ones actually within its borders.mistermack wrote:Or if it was clear that there was the threat of imminent genocide of ethnic russians, like in Georgia, they might be forced to intervene.

From what I gather, Ukraine seems to have a much more pronounced existing split between east and west halves than Poland ever had. That's not to say that an actual split should occur, but that there may be some basis for the possibility.Warren Dew wrote:About as much as Poland. It worked for Slovakia and the Czech Republic...

Wrong, and even if it was right, it wouldn't follow.Warren Dew wrote:About as much as Poland. Split Poland too?mistermack wrote:Who would it harm? Ukraine doesn't have much of a history as an independent country anyway.
