Rolf Harris in court over assaults

TV presenter Rolf Harris has appeared in court charged with nine counts of indecent assault and four of making indecent images of children.

Mr Harris, 83, stood to give his name and confirm his address at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

His case was referred to Southwark Crown Court and he is due to appear there on 7 October.

Mr Harris was first arrested in March by officers investigating historical allegations of child sexual abuse.

Anyone famous has their career destroyed, just by an allegation these days.

The one about indecent images of children is particularly misleading. If you download porn, how can you know if what you're looking at is over sixteen? It's impossible to tell, some girls look much older than their ages, and some look far younger than what they are. If they could prove that one of those pics was of a girl aged fifteen and eleven months, you have made an indecent image of a child. Even if it's one contained in a bunch, that you didn't even look at.

It's about time they started keeping the name confidential, at least until conviction.
The reason that they don't, is that they are hoping that others will jump on the bandwagon, and they will get a conviction by numbers of accusers. But that ignores the motive accusers have, of making money out of a famous person.

Good idea though, I see no reason why in such abuse cases the entirety of the cases are kept confidential. The public are far too reactionary for it to be in their "best interests". It is cheap tabloid gossip writ large.
