Dev - tell me about Terry Riley please

Post by Rum » Fri Mar 02, 2018 9:55 pm

Somehow only just stumbled upon the rather splendid fellow. I heard Rainbow in Curved Air for the first time today. Wonderful - and I don't know how I missed him.

As a musico what's your take?

i had a class in high school called humanities, it qualified as English. We heard the piece in the time it was recorded. The teachers were hipsters and all the boys were in love with the woman teacher. And we wrote down Terry Riley--minimalism.

I heard this of his yesterday. Written and performed in 1969 amazingly - years ahead of its time. Blew me away. (the 2001 SO style video takes a few seconds to start).

Thanks Brian. It was actually watching this (excellent) programme that made me stumble on Terry Riley. Listened to the whole album in the car yesterday and loved it.

Sorry I’ve taken so long to respond, Rum.

I must admit that Riley is new to me, and that I find this blind spot disturbing. How the hell his name never came up during my degree studies, especially considering I did a module on minimalism and covered names like Glass and Reich, is beyond me.

Minimalism has a detached, mesmerising quality; there’s something sci-fi about it and as we all know the best sci-fi has incredible soul and insight in to humanity.

The second I heard Riley’s music I thought of The Who, in particular the synthesisers on “Love rain o’er me” from Quadrophenia - those gorgeous, sweeping, waltzy arpeggios as the camera pans high above Jimmy on his moped.

But then there was an even more direct reference - “Baba O’Reilly” (the song with Teenage Wastelands in the lyrics) It’s riddled with references, including the very name of the song.

I hope Terry made a packet from every arcade game producer - he’s been sampled to death, but it’s invigorating and weird to hear the background of the gamer age as art.

Pete Townsend was apparently directly paying homage to Riley - good to know. The programme I discovered him through (link above) suggests that both Glass and Reich owe a lot to him - directly too. (been exploring since I sent the OP!).

I shall explore some more too (and drive everyone in the house mad with the bubbly fuckery of the music :{D )

Lamont Young is definitely worth a punt - if you can spare the time.
