The Frank Zappa thread

Far more demanding than the Stones and the Beatles (who were better than the Stones as anyone with taste knows!). Zappa has a genius niche all his own. His music can still make me mist up.

I recently saw Zappa Plays Zappa in concert. It was quite the experience, though I was with the fiancee so it was sadly a sober experience :-(

You saw Dweezil Zappa play? For better or worse (in that he has not developed his own style) he plays almost exactly and as well as his dad.

I always promised myself I would see Frank Z live and never did. He died relatively young of prostate cancer and I missed the chance..selfish bastard. Second best would be seeing Dweezil play his dad's stuff.

Being on 'best behaviour' cos you are with your bride to be? Careful there mate! :? You need your soul mate to know and live with all the wild bits!

Yeah, well acid rock and metal isn't really here thing (even if it is mine.) Besides, she's not averse to the good drink. Just partaking of it in public when surrounded by strangers (And I can see the logic in that, though I've convinced her that when we go to Australia for our honeymoon that we should do some bar hoping.)

But to go back on topic. Yeah, he can sure play it, but he (graciously) doesn't do any vocals. Not a bad thing of course. And some of the people who play with him are talented in ways I cannot even begin to fathom. They really have the showmanship down,.

Now this is what i call a thread! Why I never started one just like it before now is beyond me!

I have everything officially released by Frank and quite a lot that isn't. The man simply redefined genius. And his take on life is one that I am still constantly amazed at - hearing tapes of him ripping Tipper Gore apart in that congressional hearing on music censorship is as perfect as any of his music.

And the bands that he put together over the years were always composed of the most accomplished musicians, musicians that he worked to death in rehearsals so that they knew dozens of songs in their entirety before they even went near a stage - that's why they managed to relax and have so much fun with music that is far more complex than almost anything else out there. Just watch this clip as a prime example.

Jimmy Carl Black died!

Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

Turn stone to bread, said Daemon Duncetan
Turn stone to bread right away...
