Rock n Roll - dead, on life support, or just in a coma?

Post by Coito ergo sum » Thu Sep 19, 2013 7:35 pm

The highlight of the MTV music awards was this: http://www.rationalia.com/forum/viewtop ... 7#p1502705

Is there even such a thing as a rock band anymore?

Who are the kick ass rock n roll bands of the 10s? Who is today's Beatles/Stones, Aerosmith/ACDC, Guns n Roses/Metallica, Pearl Jam/Nine Inch Nails?

Rock n Roll will never die? That may be one prophecy that has already failed...

Rock'n'roll is definitely on the way down.

Of course, it might be that we're just getting old. :zilla:

There's still great rock coming out, it's just not what the majority of teens are listening to right now.

I think the mantle of "naughty music" was pretty much taken over by hip hop in the late 80s/90s but it's become just as co-opted, made safe as rock and roll or punk or rave/techno. I love this quote of George Melly from 1970.

Each successive pop music explosion has come roaring out of the clubs in which it was born like an angry young bull. Watching from the other side of the gate, the current Establishment has proclaimed it dangerous, subversive, a menace to youth, and demanded something be done about it. Something is. Commercial exploitation advances towards it holding out a bucketful of recording contracts, television appearances and world-wide fame. Then, once the muzzle is safely buried in the golden mash, the cunning butcher nips deftly along the flank and castrates the animal. After this painless operation, the Establishment realizes it is safe to advance into the field and gingerly pats the now docile creature which can then be safely relied on to grow fatter and stupider until the moment when fashion decides it is ready for the slaughterhouse.
Priests...dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of daylight and scowl on the fatal harbinger announcing the subversions of the duperies on which they live.

-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Correa de Serra, April 11, 1820

It all sounds like noise and you can't tell what they're singing about.

Well, thankfully we can count on rachelbean to be the voice of optimism. I'm not convinced, but perhaps there is still hope....

You'd have to define "rock", I like mine with a bit of a Southern accent. Here's some rockabilly, just got their first album. Jerry Lee would be proud.

Jason Isbell, formerly of the Drive By Truckers.

Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
