This was my fathers attitude to classical music. He loved country and Jim Reeves but didn't think much to classical except a bit of Chopin, he picked up in the war years. Is this a generational thing? He was proper working class and grew up on a farm, seldom swore or drank?

Didn't swear, didn't drink, didn't like classical music. Not my kinda company.

I have limited tastes in classical. Mostly anti-symphony. For Sibelius, tone poems only. Stravinsky was OK. A small blog:

If it's quiet, melodic, romantic music I'm Ok. The smooth side of the classics are what I can and do listen to when I want to zone out. Relaxational and quiet. Unfortunately, a lot sounds like it was made to give a heart attack - going from really quiet to really loud in a instant with no warning and no explanation. I don't like the bombastic marching music. It really must be touching my feminine side and have some kind of emotional appeal for me. They could do that in the 19th century when they wanted but for some reason it isn't popular to be emotionaly pleasing with classical, even today.

I have and awful lot of the Vivaldi concertos. According to an alleged Stravinsky quote, Vivaldi didn't write 500 concertos. He merely wrote the same concerto 500 times.

This is not true, only 350 of them have a sameness among themselves. I can ID maybe 50 of them form the first allagro.

Telemann wrote hundreds of pieces, many are suites etc. so a bit longer.

The problem with a lot of classical music is it's too twinkly and airy-fairy. Kinda like pop music, The Beatles, that sort of thing. Like all genres the majority of it sucks balls and only listened to by the die-hards who'll swallow big cream loads of it and be pretentious about it and tell you you're not a 'true fan' because you only listen to a selection (at least with classical we're spared, "You weren't there, man".)

But when an artiste with mad skillz on the string arrangements comes along shit rocks :feck:



That shit's da bomb. Sort of a Kashmir of classical.

And tell you pops Jim Reeves falls into the former mundane, sexless, Christian side-huggy category.

But that Beethoven 7th is better than my CD, 7 CDs for 7 dollars. I think it was the San Marino radio orchestra.
