Guitar people

Post by Gallstones » Thu Apr 21, 2011 10:46 pm

This is what I have learned the past seven months--a bunch of chords (duh), keys, runs, rotations, notes, some orchestration.

Are the terms (see above) universal, or regional and you all have no idea what I'm talking about?

My last class was this past Monday and I have forgotten a thing or two since. I don't want to forget anything. I have forgotten how to do the run from the Dm to Bflat.

Can anybody enlighten me?

If you can, give it to me in this format: string (EADGBE) finger (1,2,3,4) and note (up neck).

If I have to I can contact my teacher with guitar emergencies.

Thanks bunches.

Cadences! Can't do a proper cadence without a 7th! The 7th of V creates a tension that is resolved by the root major chord. For example, G7 just screams at your ears to be followed by C. Even folkies use 7ths! And they hardly know ANY chords!

Jazz and because they sound lovely

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

7ths in jazz? Well I suppose they use a few, but only if they can't squeeze in a 9th, 11th, 13th, or minor major 7th (added 11th.) :tea:

Jazz chords is scary - but they sound soooooo good!

Blues. You can't play blues without 7ths. Sometimes you can throw in a 9th.

There are 7 notes in a major scale. The root note of the scale uses the first, third and fifth notes.

The seventh chord uses the 7th note as well (except it doesn't - quite!)

Actually, it is derived from the major chord on the fifth note of the scale and uses the 7th note of that progression.

So, in a C Major scale, the C chord is C-E-G, the 5th chord (G) is G-B-D and the 5th7 chord (G7) is G-B-D-F.

The closeness of the G and F notes in the chord create a discord that the ear wants to resolve - this happens when the C major chord is played straight afterwards - there is an almost sexual relief of tension.

there is also a Major7th chord, which is made by adding the 7th note of the scale to the Root major chord - eg. in C Major, C-E-G-B. This has a much 'jazzier' feel than the ordinary (or dominant) 7th.

Try playing an open C chord with the 3rd string open. it's a nice sound.

It's easiest to see on a piano. For a major 7th it's the first, third, fifth and seventh note in the scale. For a minor seventh it's the first, flatted 3rd, fifth, and flatted 7th. "flatted" means dropping those notes 1/2 step.

Here's a cool site that will show you any chord on a piano keyboard.

For guitar its easiest just to use a chord chart.

I'm going to have to do some hard thinking to grasp this. With regards to the guitar, I am a kinesthetic learner.

Thank you for all this X. I'm going to use it as homework and try to understand what you are talking about. I mean that.

it's easier to hear it than to understand it technically. Play a G7 for a while and then play a C - you WILL feel the resolution of tension.

Yeah, dominant 7ths - 1st, 3rd, 5th and flatted 7th.

For a major 9th you add the 9th note to the major 7th chord - but the 9th is actually the octave of the 2nd. In a C scale that would be C-E-G-B-D, or you can play it C-D-E-G-B but it sounds better with the octave D.

11ths, 13ths, etc are formed the same way, by counting up from the root and adding the 11th or 13th or whatever note.

Xamonas can get into augmented, diminished and suspended chords, they always confuse the fuck out of me.
