I vote both. I think she is talented and she knows what sells. She has a better voice than most pop or rock singers and is great on piano but knew that's not what it takes to get famous so she made herself a spectacle and it worked. I still find her annoying most of the time but I ain't gonna hate the playa

Well, she's recycling a lot of ideas that were interesting in the seventies and eighties-- David Bowie experimental "Velvet Goldmine"-type fashion, Madonna's pop sexuality, Grace Jones performance art, etc., etc.
She posits herself as someone who's pushing the envelope, but nothing she's doing is new. Her most recent hit is practically a chord-by-chord rip off of Madonna's hit from two decades ago: "Express Yourself." And she's smart to dress in outlandish get-ups, since they cover the fact that she is remarkably plain.
But anyone who'll play the piano while wearing a giant chrome gyroscope mounted to her hips can't be all bad, in my book.

Madonna rip-off.
I mean...I'm not even a Madonna fan, but that nonsense she played at the Grammies was OBVIOUSLY stolen from Madonna.

Yup. She even starts it similarly, with an echoey voice-over. First time i heard it, I actually wondered if Madonna had given the song to her: 'Here-- my songwriters put this together, but it's too much like my previous work, so I'm giving it a pass..."Coito ergo sum wrote:Madonna rip-off.

She might have a perky tuckus, but the incredibly-high french-cut she insists on makes her pelvis look weird-- flat and really long-- almost like a Ken doll's pelvis. NOT flattering.Seabass wrote:I vote: c) Great Ass.Rum wrote:I vote the second.

We had an identical thread a few months back. Can't be arsed to find it and merge them though.
I think the difference between her and madge is that madonna reinvented herself along the way. So far, Lady G has just picked a 'style' and stuck with it. Let's see if she can keep up with the times or end up being yet another footnote.

Utter shite.
Being able to play an instrument and sing doesn't automatically mean you have talent. Sure she has an ear for making music people like but a real artist doesn't give a shit if you like them or not. They just make music and you like it or not.

My wife and I went to her concert in DC last night.
It was fantastic. Oh, don't get me wrong - I have my own criticisms of her music. It is, ultimately, just danceable pop stuff with some sexual edginess. I wasn't jumping around and screaming like most of the audience was. But that's really 'cause I'm a stoic type who's happy enough to stand and just smile when I saw or heard something I liked. And I was smiling through most of it. As for the rest of the audience, it was pretty amazing how much some people got into it. The two girls sitting next to me were twenty-somethings wearing flourescent wigs and full-body lingerie. When an audience is dedicated like that, it'll be a good show. And whether or not you like what she does, she is at least at the top of her game - and that's the way you put on a concert; exciting and extravagant from start to finish.

Re: Lady Gaga. Genius or full of crap?
Yeah, I can't say that I'm a fan. I just don't "get" the hype. Her "forward" fashion with vinyl and rubber is something I've seen at clubs for years. I don't think she's all that shocking or original, especially if you've already seen the style/videos of artists like Little Boots, Roisin Murphy, or Goldfrapp. I don't really dig her music all that much either, maybe in small doses? Her videos are fun to watch but I could never listen to her on my own.
Too much other good music I need to get around to discovering.
