Won a Cowon S9 on ebay for abot $110 shipped. Post auction I realize it doesn't come with cables. $11 cable off Amazon, so no biggie, but it's disconcerting when you slip up on the details of an expensive purchase.

Anyway, looking forward to owning it. I'll be able to move to good bluetooth, hands-free operation, and the bulk of my music uses Monkey's lossless encoding, which this player understands, so I don't have to convert a CD to mp3 before I throw it on my player. That will be nice, even if it does eat deeply into its limited 16 GB memory. (Monkey's lossless files average 5-6 times the size of a typical mp3, so a single CD will take variously 250-500 MB of memory.) And I just noticed that the codecs on-board the device only go up to Monkey's version 3.99, and that's not the current version. That might be out-of-date information, too; I won't know until I start checking out the latest firmware. The bulk of my stuff was encoded using 3.99 or earlier, but there may be a small section that is post-3.99; probably won't matter, as most encodings will be the same for pre and post 3.99 encodings, but I'll know more once I get the device. I don't know what if any tool I have for checking the encoding level of specific files, or if it will even matter.

(I just checked. Winamp2 which I use for my music has version 3.99 installed, and I've never noticed any compatibility problems with anything in my collection. So... I'm thinking,)

So you are still keeping CDs?

I keep the CDs themselves, but everything is on the computer now. The CDs are ripped at CD quality and stored on the computer that way. I've got 800-1000 or so CDs worth on the server, about 3/4 of which is CD quality.

I have maybe 2000 and only the ones on iPod are ripped. Plus 32GB in a thumb drive of CDs I no longer have.

Most CDs I play on a desk top one piece stereo.

Current setup. Marantz one disc player on bottom, newest part. Onkyo amp-tuner. Technics turntable a bit defective. On top is a DVD player I used to play one disc at a time. The 5-disc changer was too much trouble, I never play more than 1-2 discs. The 5 disc changer is 10-15 years old. No problems with it, putting it in a box. My son has an apartment for fall, but neither kid has an actual stereo, otherwise they could have the 5 disc changer they are used to. Speakers are simple Insignia, two cones and some bass system, 120W.

If my kids wanted an apartment size thing, I would suggest a small home theater with a sound bar. They could still plug in a CD player. The DVD player would also work for one disc. So they will probably not need my hand me down.

The new CD displays the name of the track on the front display. Is there some code on the CD that it reads as text? My car stereo only does this with mp3s.
