I'm the same. I occasionally go a couple of years hearing nothing "new" but usually because I'm mining a couple of back catalogues. It's always good to come back and find something unique or curious.

Agreed that "new" also includes "new to me", and I meant to mention that in my post. And yes, I am much less hung up about what is "cool" or not. It's either good or it isn't. Some music that I liked when I was young I now thoroughly dislike, and vice-versa. Much of what I liked in my youth - or admitted to liking - was driven by the "cool" factor. Of course, there was a time when I was really young when I neither knew nor cared what "cool" meant, and I'd listen to (and like) just about anything. Maybe I've come full-circle.Audley Strange wrote:I would agree with you on that somewhat I'd say it is the age when one grows up and realises there is no "cool". It's only new to you that matters. If you've been a Metallica fan all your life and suddenly start digging Rachmaninov then it's new music. I think one of the problems with contemporary music is that it is seen as a "teen" market which means that some interesting and sophisticated stuff is given an erroneous taxonomy because of how limited our discussions of music are.klr wrote:I think there's also an age element in this. As in, once you get beyond a certain age, you are much less inclined to spend the time seeking out and listening to "new" music. As ever with these things, that varies from one person to another.
I just seem to have no real motivation to seek out new music nowadays - I'd much rather read books instead.
