I rather think of it that he was the best at the time, had a huge personality that made him be noticed by many people, and for a great many listeners was the ultimate guitar hero at the time. Ok, there were other people first like Clapton, Link Wray etc, but he was the one who exploded onto the scene in a way no one forgot.

I quite like him, but just like bassists' worship of Jaco Pastorius the "best" tag is vastly over-used and should be replaced with "First" paving the way for much much better musicians to follow.

Hendrix died young. That is key to immortality as a rock star. He'd still be a ground breaking artist but not as well recalled if he'd lived into his dotage and started producing rubbish comeback albums in his seventies like some do.
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

I never thought Hendrix was particularly good until I heard him do a straight version of Killing Floor. The guy was a fucking wizard.

What about Vernon Reid from Living Colour? Granted, the guy has the most god-awful picking technique in the universe, but still....
