Hadn't heard of a Zendrum before today...
It's essentially just a midi controller. You can play any midi instrument (say, a string instrument) on it, too.

Yeah, stuff like this is cool. I've got a friend with a MIDI pickup on one of his guitars; it's always fun to play, and pretty useful for recording.

That depends on how it's programmed. That's what makes MIDI so powerful: you can assign values to each input and, by choosing those values carefully, make it such that anything played is sonorous. For instance, by making each input pad play a chord diatonic to C major, you can give non-musicians the ability to string together simple chords that, no matter what, will sound tuneful.
