Re: The Second amendment
Here's where I get a chance to query an Australian usage. In the UK, quite is generally equivalent to 'somewhat' or 'more or less', while in the US, quite is equivalent to 'rather' or 'very'. I'd think that Australians are more in the UK school regarding this usage, but I don't know for sure. Could you clarify for me?

Re: The Second amendment
For speakers of the English language it can mean either.L'Emmerdeur wrote: ↑Tue Aug 27, 2019 10:01 pmHere's where I get a chance to query an Australian usage. The meaning depends on context. Take "Australians are quite good at doing context." The context need not be explicit. For example, "quite" might mean "very" when we mean "Australians are quite good at doing context (compared to boorish Americans)" Or "somewhat" when we mean "Australians are quite good at doing context (compared to educated Britons)".1.
to the utmost or most absolute extent or degree; absolutely; completely.
"it's quite out of the question"
synonyms: completely, fully, entirely, totally, wholly, absolutely, utterly, outright, thoroughly, altogether, in every respect, in all respects, without reservation, without exception
"there are in fact two quite different types"
US
very; really (used as an intensifier).
"‘You've no intention of coming back?’ ‘I'm quite sorry, but no, I have not.’"
West Indian
all the way.
"dresses quite from Port of Spain"
2.
to a certain or fairly significant extent or degree; fairly.
"it's quite warm outside"
synonyms: fairly, rather, somewhat, a bit, a little, slightly, relatively, comparatively, moderately, after a fashion, reasonably, to some extent/degree, to a certain extent; informalpretty, kind of, sort of, ish
"it was quite common in the last century"

Quit yer yappin', Edna. Moonee Ponds is quite happy to be rid of you, and the rest of Australia wouldn't mind at all if you had one final, fatal drop of gin too many or just jump in the lake.

Oh, look at the time! Brush your teeth, then it's off to bed with you, young man. Mummy will be along in a few minutes and read you your nighttime story.
