In a candid conversation with Frank Rich last fall, Chris Rock said, "Oh, people don’t even know. If poor people knew how rich rich people are, there would be riots in the streets." The findings of three studies, published over the last several years in Perspectives on Psychological Science, suggest that Rock is right. We have no idea how unequal our society has become.

Agreed, but where we probably differ is that I would contend that capitalism, by its nature, almost always drifts towards predatory behaviour and extreme wealth disparities unless reined in by significant government action, backed by a society that recognises the need for such action. Some degree of such controls exists in most places, but is often only modestly effective, the Nordic countries being a possible exception.

And I have said in the past that innovation, an entrepeneurial spirit and personal freedoms are aspects of capitalism that can and should be retained...

Define entrepeneurial spirit. Sounds like woo to me.

It is probably partially hyperbole, but to me, it also captures something of the way that personal motivation, curiosity and dogged determination have pushed boundaries in technological development...

Define entrepeneurial spirit.
John Howard, a former, very conservative Australian Prime Minister, called it "incentivisation".

Appearances to the contrary, I agree with JimC on this: We need a judicious mix of capitalism and socialism.

A well regulated society, being necessary to the welfare of the people, laissez faire capitalism and command style communism shall be comprehensively infringed.
