What should be done: For starters, guns designed for the sole purpose of killing lots of people in a short amount of time should be illegal. The only practical application they have is mass murder, which (call me a wild man) I'd like to discourage. Second, some sort of background check system.

What I expect to be done: Not a whole lot. Too many people see any form of gun control, even the most trivial and symbolic, as the first domino in a liberal chain reaction where they end up slaves to gay atheist baby-killing communist immigrants.

I wonder whether there will be the typical reaction of gun owners after a massacre - head out to stock up on guns and ammunition in case gun bans happen. Or will they conclude (as I do), that bans or even modest controls so unlikely that they won't be bothered?

Republicans don't care. Brown kids, brown shooter. Probably illegals and likely future drug smugglers and killers. They can easily be replaced by banning abortions, and true patriots will actually patrol underprivileged neighbourhoods to impregnate likely future baby producers. NRA will fund the clubhouses!
