A US teacher who was shot by a six-year-old student has sued school administrators for $US40 million ($59 million), alleging they ignored warnings from staff and pupils that the boy had a gun.

The attack on Abigail Zwerner in Newport News on January 6 was unusual among US school shootings given the young age of the assailant and the fact police said the boy shot his first grade teacher on purpose.

The complaint said Richneck Elementary School assistant principal Ebony Parker failed in her duty to protect Ms Zwerner despite multiple reports a firearm was on school property and likely in the boy's possession.

Ms Parker, who resigned after the shooting, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Authorities in the Virginia city where a six-year-old shot and wounded his teacher will not seek criminal charges against the child, a prosecutor told US news, a decision anticipated by legal experts.

Also named as defendants were the Newport News School Board, former schools superintendent George Parker, who was fired after the shooting, and former Richneck principal Briana Foster Newton, who was assigned another role in the district.

Ms Zwerner said school leaders knew of the student's history of attacks on pupils and teachers and allowed the boy to return to the school in 2022 after he was removed for violent behaviour.

Some truth to that. Very regular folks doing the "vacation" stuff. California is more snooty of new age at times. Them somewhat conservative light beer drinkers don't want to see that. Also more poverty and trailers in Florida.
