‘Not great news’: US boss fires 900 employees on a Zoom call
Vishal Garg told the Better.com staff they were ‘part of the unlucky group’ that would be terminated ‘immediately’

The chief executive of a US mortgage company has drawn criticism after he reportedly fired 900 employees on a Zoom call.

“I come to you with not great news,” Vishal Garg, CEO of Better.com, is heard saying at the beginning of the video call made on Wednesday last week. Footage of the call was widely circulated on social media.

“If you’re on this call, you are part of the unlucky group being laid off. Your employment here is terminated effective immediately,” Garg continued, citing changes in the market, “efficiency” and “productivity” as the reasons behind the mass termination.

“The market has changed … we have to move with it in order to survive,” the 43-year-old offered as explanation. “Ultimately it was my decision and I wanted you to hear it from me.”

He then reportedly said the employees could expect an email from HR with details of severance and benefits.
USA firings are the best firings.

anybody know what that company works in and provides? methinks a boycott is in order, if only to teach them to do things properly, even when such things are unpleasant like a mass firing, though I guess it should be done on principle, because I bet that firing was not necessary to let the company survive, just to reduce the wage load so investors can get more.

Online mortgage brokers Svarty. The lay-offs account for 9% of the workforce. The company had $150m invested last month. Sounds like investors are just securing their quarterlys to me.

Just what I said... and while I guess they don't work in France, I'm not even sure online lending services are legal here, much less ones that imply the mortgaging of real estate... Yep, just checked, you have to go through a notary public to do that here (solicitor in the UK), unless the mortgage is set up by way of justice, then the court, and likely certain public law officers (huissiers, people whose job is to look over at legally important situations to certify the facts in a way that can't be denied in court, they also serve due process and act in the forcible recovery of debts).

The spectacle at a South Dakota hockey match that saw teachers scrambling for dollar bills on their hands and knees, forced an apology and some cash compensation by the bank that organized the stunt.

The lack of maintenance:

Golden Gate Bridge’s eerie hum could be silenced by 2022
The ‘unbearable’ noise echoing in the city since June can be fixed by aluminium clips containing a rubber sleeve costing $450,000

The eerie hum of the Golden Gate Bridge, which has elicited comparisons to “chanting monks” and a “wheezing kazoo”, may soon be muffled.

Local officials have offered a fix to the “unbearable” noise that’s been echoing in San Francisco neighbourhoods – much to the irritation of some residents – on particularly gusty days since last year. The Golden Gate bridge, highway and transportation district has proposed an estimated $450,000 project to install aluminium clips that will help reduce the sound created when wind hits the slats in the bridge’s hand railing.
The Americans just dont get it.

I've never had to live there so I can only speak as a tourist. It's an interesting city, both historically and geographically.
