Unlucky Thugs Target Texas Man With Heightened Sense of Awareness…and a Concealed Carry Permit
Sep. 12, 2013 10:39pm Jason Howerton

Two unlucky thugs attempted to carjack a concealed carry permit holder in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday. The miscalculation turned out to be deadly as the would-be victim shot and killed one of the criminals and wounded the other.

After returning a movie at a Redbox kiosk outside of a local McDonald’s, the man was approached by two suspects who attempted to steal his car for the rims, according to police. The suspects also took his cellphone and car keys, KTRK-TV reports.

The man was forced out of his car and pushed down. What the aggressive criminals didn’t know was that he was a concealed carry permit hold and had his firearm on him.

Sensing the situation was dire, the man drew his handgun and opened fire. He fatally shot one of the robbers and wounded the other suspect with two or three shots, according to KTRK-TV. The second suspect fled the scene and had not been apprehended.

The carjacking victim told KHOU-TV he didn’t want to appear on camera but said he was doing OK.

A grand jury will “consider whether deadly force was necessary to avoid his own death or harm,” KTRK-TV notes. However, the station’s legal analyst says it appears to be a clear-cut case of justifiable homicide.

It is not uncommon for residents in the north Houston neighborhood to be extra cautious in the area.

“It is kind of odd being right out in the open. I guess people and the desperate need of people nowadays,” Dedrick Moore, who visits the same McDonald’s regularly, told KHOU-TV. “They give up hope and try to go any other way to get their means.”

“I am always checking my area. Looking around knowing what is going on around me,” he added.

It was that same vigilant mentality that possibly saved the life of the Houston man who refused to be a carjacking victim.

Which one of the assailants told reporters that they were stealing the car for the rims? Was it the dead one? Or the injured one that fled the scene and has not been found? :hehe:

And no, this is not a comment on guns or anything about them - simply a comment on supposition passed off as journalism. :tea:

They might have mentioned something about wanting the rims before they got shot :ask:

"Heightened senses"?!? LOL. What sort of genius needs "heightened senses" to realise he is danger AFTER he is pushed to the ground. What a ridiculous article.

It is a good thing.

Criminals should fear and know that if they try to victimize people, they might get shot, and killed.

Unlike all the shitty countries, where you can rob, rape, and murder with impunity, knowing no one can stop you.

If all they have to fear is getting the cops called on them, then there is nothing to fear, because they will be long gone by then, or they will stop you from calling at all. Then you're totally helpless and they can really have their way with you.

Yeah, better kill them criminals, otherwise if you miss on shooting, they can have bad dreams and will need to sue you for emotional trauma.

Um, shooting people who are trying to rob and kill you may be "homicide" but it's not "murder." And what's wrong with a little justifiable homicide from time to time? There are simply some people who need to be dead.

I must have missed the bit where they were trying to kill him. Did they push him to the ground with a crowbar?

Actually, that's all too true. In fact that is one of the primary reasons that the "castle doctrine" laws are spreading in the US. Lawmakers recognized that there were too many instances of innocent homeowners being sued into bankruptcy by crooks and the families of crooks injured or killed in the pursuit of their trade. They infrequently won such civil cases, but merely suing someone is often enough to bankrupt them with legal fees.

But you never "shoot to kill." Here's what you say:

"Sir, did you intend to kill the deceased plaintiff when you fired on him?"

"No, I intended to render him incapable of continuing the conduct that prompted me to shoot him in the first place."

Got that bit of advice directly from the District Attorney during the court procedure phase of the police academy. I've never forgotten it because it's sage wisdom and advice.

A grand jury will “consider whether deadly force was necessary to avoid his own death or harm,” KTRK-TV notes. However, the station’s legal analyst says it appears to be a clear-cut case of justifiable homicide.
One is not required to wait to be killed or injured before exercising the right to self-defense. One need only have a "reasonable belief" that one is imminently facing death or serious bodily harm, combined with a reasonable belief that a lesser degree of force would be inadequate, in order to be able to justifiably use deadly force.

That's what the grand jury will decide.
