My initial training came from the adults in my family who were hunters. They drilled safety into me long before I took a Boy Scouts training course. For example, whether you think the weapon is loaded or not, always keep the muzzle pointed in a neutral direction, always check the backstop before firing, unload hunting weapons before you come indoors (unless it is also your home protection weapon), don't put your finger on the trigger until it's time to shoot, if kids are around, put everything out of reach, etc. Yeah, out of many thousands of times handling guns, I've had a couple of accidental discharges. But because I habitually kept the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, nobody was hurt.

More Australian motorcycle gang DIY firearms surface
Two homebuilt pistols were seized among other firearms on Tuesday by police in Sydney...Both examples appear very well made.
...
To recap, a number of improvised submachine guns have been seized in Australia recently, many based on the Expedient Homemade Firearms series of manuals by British author Philip Luty.

Filipino blacksmith revolver: Fruit of a ban.
On the island of Cebu in the Philippines, village gunsmiths have been turning out home made firearms for over a century now. Working from factory-built guns as exemplars, these shadetree artisans can manufacture weapons that are often astonishing in their sophistication.

The important points are:
1. They have been seized, and a sizeable proportion of guns in criminal hands will continue to be seized.
2. Such guns are not widely available. Teenage wannabes and others will find them very hard to get hold of, unlike the case in the US...

You can't seize something when you don't know where it is. The point is they are there, it's just that these ones have been seized. The other pertinent point is that two of them were home made and of good quality.

The odd hand-gun is around, but they are in the hands of relatively few criminals, who use them more often than not against each other. Oz is not going to be overwhelmed by a tidal wave of home-made guns. For us, the key point is that there are few hand-guns around, the authorities work hard to maintain that, and that's the way we like it. Plenty of sporting rifles for hunting, though...

You can't really say how many there are or who has them.
Who implied you'd be overwhelmed by a tidal wave of home-made guns?
Way to evade the point.

An AR 15 is a sporting rifle. Are there plenty of them?

What sort of money American’s shell out to thumb off a few rounds each year.
When just the retail aspects of target shooting are calculated – guns, ammo, range time, etc. — it turns out Americans spend some $9.9 billion annually...
...
As target shooters’ dollars exchanged hands, $23 billion in economic activity was created, producing $3.5 billion in sorely needed state and federal tax revenues.
The report estimates target shooting supported 185,402 jobs across the United States in 2011. When hunting is included the monetary and employment impacts of gun sports go through the roof:
Collectively, these two industries generate $110 billion in economic output and support 866,339 jobs. That’s more jobs than the combined employees of IBM and McDonald’s.
That's TARGET shooting, spending time at the range putting holes in paper or making metal targets go "ding".

Watching a tribute march in Boston. They carry unloaded rifles in parades? Can they load at all, or do they not carry live ammunition? What if you are in the tribute parade and you suddenly NEED your weapon, to fire?

You wait for the proper authorities to come kill the bad guys, obviously, just like they did in the last marathon. Trust the Police, they are Your Friend.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
