Aaaand another one.

'My Parents Open Carry' Pro-gun picture book for children
Pro-gun picture book for children aims to reassure kids about parents' weapons
My Parents Open Carry aims to explain 'the right to bear arms and the growing practice of the open carry of a handgun'

Sporting a cover image of a blue-eyed family with guns clipped to their belts, a new American children's picture book is setting itself out as the solution for all those parents who "carry a gun and sometimes struggle with how to best explain the reasons" to their children.

My Parents Open Carry, by Brian Jeffs and Nathan Nephew, co-founders of the pro-gun Michigan Open Carry, has been released by small US publisher White Feather Press. The picture-book fellows a "typical Saturday running errands and having fun together" for 13-year-old Brenna Strong and her parents, say the authors. "What's not so typical is that Brenna's parents lawfully open carry handguns for self-defence."

Jeffs and Nephew say they were moved to write the book because they "looked for pro-gun children's books and couldn't find any". My Parents Open Carry is, say the authors, "written in the hope of providing a basic overview of the right to keep and bear arms as well as the growing practice of the open carry of a handgun", because "we fear our children are being raised with a biased view of our constitution and especially in regards to the 2nd Amendment".

"Our goal was to provide a wholesome family book that reflects the views of the majority of the American people, ie, that self-defence is a basic natural right and that firearms provide the most efficient means for that defence," they write.

Grandmas start gun gang--call themselves WAR. August 5, 2014
Grandmothers get robbed, start gun group

Grandmothers Konnie Couch and Robin Willoughby, 52 and 57, from Aurora in Dearborn County sit next to each other in matching pink shirts and chat about their businesses, grandchildren, illnesses. And their guns.

Both women have concealed carry licenses and carry their handguns with them at all times. And they know how to use them.

Couch and Willoughby are the founders of a new local group, Women Armed and Ready, or WAR. After both women were robbed around 2011, they decided they were tired of being victims and didn't want to see others go through what they did. After two years of development, they held their first meeting May 6.

"The thing of it is, bad things happen to good people all the time, and, if something bad is going to happen, it's gonna happen without warning," Couch said. "It's gonna be very quick, and you've gotta be prepared for it."
...
Gun ownership among women is on the rise.
...
There are 35 registered members of WAR, though Willoughby said "we've never had less than 40 at a meeting," with an age range of 50 to 81.

All members have their concealed carry licenses.
...
Police chief says of WAR: 'I think it's a good thing.'

Moms opt out of National Night Out event after rifle group plans protest 8/5/201
Moms Demand Action, a group advocating gun control, has withdrawn its application to appear at Tuesday night's National Night Out in Arlington Heights after the Illinois State Rifle Association rallied its members to attend and protest the event.
...
A local chapter of the group applied and was approved by the Arlington Heights Park District to be one of the 40 to 45 vendors on-site at National Night Out in North School Park tonight.
...
after an email from the Illinois State Rifle Association to its members advised people to call the park district to complain and attend Tuesday's National Night Out event in protest, the group withdrew its application.

The email encouraged ISRA members to spread the word about the protest through online blogs and get as many members and NRA supporters to attend National Night Out in protest.
...
The debate is the latest instance of North School Park being used as a public forum for free speech. During the holiday season the park district allows both a Nativity scene, as well as a protest sign from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, to be displayed in North School Park.

"North School Park is considered a public forum and has historically provided a space for the expression of constitutionally protected free speech, subject to reasonable Park District rules and regulations," the park district message said.

"By law, the Park District must administer this public forum without discrimination and has done so in the past."
...
National Night Out is focused on crime prevention, and is an opportunity for police and other emergency personnel to mix with residents in a festival setting.
Considering that last sentence, I wonder why the MOMs pulled out? Are they insecure about their message?

Rethinking the 21 foot Rule by Bob Irwin
October 01, 2007
Back in 1988, Calibre Press released a stunning law enforcement training tape titled "Surviving Edged Weapons." It included a sequence that showed how long it takes the average officer to draw and fire his or her sidearm when reacting to a charging, knife-wielding suspect.

In repeated scenarios of similar attacks with different officers, the video reveals that it takes about one-and-a-half seconds for the officer to draw and fire two shots. From that time reading, the narrator determines that the attacker could be as far away as 21 feet and still stab the officer before he could effectively fire his handgun. The tape then goes on to discuss tactical alternatives such as side stepping the opponent or using intervening objects to disrupt the line of attack.

The tape is great, but it has led to a dangerous myth. Over the years, this simple demonstration of draw speed has morphed into an astounding misconception that now permeates law enforcement and security training, "The 21-Foot Rule."

Let's take a close look at why this almost universal law enforcement myth is dead wrong.

Research by Dr. Bill Lewinski of The Force Science Research Center and Dr. Marvin Fackler has repeatedly shown that officer reaction times are significantly longer than commonly believed.

Now consider that the officers on the Calibre tape knew where the suspect was, what he was armed with, and that he was about to charge. On the tape, the suspect begins to move and the officer begins to draw. That eliminates the real-world delays of perceiving the threat and then making the decision to defend with gunfire.

The Force Science Research Center has shown that it takes the average officer about half a second to perceive a threat and approximately another half second to decide what to do about it. All of this has to happen before the officer begins his or her draw stroke. What this means is that with the threat closing at seven feet per half second, we are closer to a 35-foot rule.

And it is extremely difficult to smoothly draw and accurately fire when under a life-threatening attack. So that means that we had better add another 10 feet to allow for the attacker to keep coming if we miss center mass or even if we hit him, even mortally wound him, and he doesn't go down.

It's now the 45-foot rule.
