Going down this route every person carrying a gun will get away with anything. "I was confused." "I felt threatened."

And pursuing someone with a plastic shopping bag is grounds for justified killing too.

Successfully Pleading self defence when you were the guy briunging a gun to a protest is not a crime without a law, it's proof that the jurors are either morons or opinionated in the wrong way.pErvinalia wrote: ↑Sat Nov 20, 2021 12:05 amThis was a difficult case. The problem with juries. That is why we dont have them. This is beyond bizarre. Plays right into NRA's hands.Svartalf wrote: ↑Sat Nov 20, 2021 10:14 amSuccessfully Pleading self defence when you were the guy briunging a gun to a protest is not a crime without a law, it's proof that the jurors are either morons or opinionated in the wrong way.pErvinalia wrote: ↑Sat Nov 20, 2021 12:05 amThis was a difficult case. It's traditional in some traditions to be judged by 'one's peers'.
In Murica, it means you get judged by brainless gun nuts.

No argument there. I didn't watch the trial, or listen to the news, only heard about the verdict.
Soon enough we'll be several smaller countries, it's inevitable.

We'll get like the Kurt Vonnegut book, one of my favorite spoof sci fi books, where he had a King of Michigan?

Re: Only in America
Haha. But don't use Bubba, too used up term.
There was visible relief to be seen among Rittenhouse’s supporters as many had feared the worst and that their champion would be treated like a minority and be sentenced to death, or one of those stupid 300-year jail terms America seems to love.
Bubba Williams, a man who thinks patriotism means actively working to create a civil war in his country, took a break from shovelling corn syrup into his fat face to say that natural justice had prevailed.

Impossible, the Civil War proved that it is illegal and inconstitutional for any part of the US to attempt and leave the Union.

Re: Only in America
The civil war only proved that the Unionists won it. Neither illegality nor unconstitutionality had anything to do with the outcome. That said, I doubt the US will experience the kind of balkanisation Yugoslavia went through in 1991-2. It lacks the underlying concentrations of diverse ethnicities. The more likely outcome is something akin to what happened in Germany. The US has barely begun on its way to it. Last January it passed the equivalent of the Beer Hall Putsch. All it takes to go the rest of the way is a leader who has the organisational ability and willingness to do some actual work that Donald Trump so manifestly lacked.Svartalf wrote: ↑Sat Nov 20, 2021 3:22 pmImpossible, the Civil War proved that it is illegal and inconstitutional for any part of the US to attempt and leave the Union.

Re: Only in America
Rittenhouse was actually running away from the man who threw the bag at him, and who later tried to take his rifle. When he threw the bag another man behind him pulled out a pistol and fired a shot. You can hear others become scared saying things like, "oh, they're shooting now".
--talking about the plastic bag as Brian has done above reeks of machismo. Clearly hearing shots fired behind you as you run from armed rioters is a bit more frightening than that...
Go ahead and watch the videos the jury did.
--//--
The problem continues to be that Rittenhouse took it upon himself to become the law and people lost their lives.
I remember the last time I needed a lawyer and I was trying to reason about why I should be let go, the lawyer reminded me that I wasn't thinking like the system. I was only thinking about myself, but the judge must also consider how my case fits into everything else.
Well, how does letting Rittenhouse walk fit in with everything else?
I think it's obviously unjust. It certainly makes a mockery of wisdom.
