The major war of the colonizing era was the 7-year war. There is little on the Asian side, but there were some French British battles on the Eeast coast of India, including the French navy. This marked the exit of France from India. To then focus on Indochina.

I have been looking at thigs Asian for a year or so. Koreans, a bit of SE Asia. I had never come across the term mandarin for bureaucrat.

It is of Portuguese origin, referring to the Chinese bureaucrats they had to deal with in the few ports that allowed trade with China.

Have gone through dozens of books that all have something on it. But I am getting the overall message that colonial holdings became more expensive to keep after 1850. Despite all the coal that was available for steam ships! One of the PP slides on two talks that are now shaping up as something for the September class.

It's just that the countries of the Northern Hemisphere are always bloated in size on those world maps. Something like this would actually throw into stark relief how such relatively small nations in Europe ended up controlling such a huge amount of the world's land masses - and the people on it.

My DVDs are coming today. If the speaker is any good, we will spend about 4 days on the new world part of the colonial era. Two days will have to wrap up Asia and Africa is only covered in the slave trade.

I'm a little early doing this as the class won't be till September. But anyway, continuing my woke/"white men behaving badly" history project, had to dig deep to find how Pizarro got to Peru. He walked/rode across Panama. Then bought 3 ships built by the Spanish right there.

Bigger picture of the Pizarro trips. All started from Panama. The city the Spanish had built to gather "gold" on that side.

One of my books brings up a good point about slavery. The book is on trade so his explanation deals with that. The ships had to go back and forth anyway, from the point of view of the shipping outfits, there was nothing else to trade for the goods in the new world.

AFRICA WAS COLONIZED LATE, WITH STEAM SHIPS. THE COASTS AND SOUTH AFRICA WERE TAKEN EARLIER TO ALLOW TRADE TO ASIA.

I have pretty much al the material for my "exploration/colonial" class. I have to say the DVD lectures are not quite as well, engagingly, presented as the Korea lectures were. But there was no issue in speaker quality, Korea just did not interest my seniors. I did tack on a Korean war as a TV documentary at the end. The war is pretty much all most Americans want to know.
