WW2 rocket launching installations.

Post by leo-rcc » Mon Mar 09, 2009 4:55 pm

I have 2 robots at the moment names after the Katjuscha and the Nebelwerfer, are there any more rocket launchers from WW2 with catchy names? I need some inspiration for the following line of robots.

"Stalin's Organ" :hilarious: , and "Screaming Mimmie" come to mind instantly.

The (Sherman) Calliope, a modified Sherman tank:

Not too catchy though, even if it is an Irish name. The US Army later developed a missile called the Shillelagh, which is an even worse name for a hi-tech weapon.

The sound Katjuscha (my robot) makes made me think of naming it so. Like the sound the Katjuscha made in WW2 scared the Germans shitless, so does my robots noise do the same. :)

Calliope is not a bad name actually. Thanks for that one.

If anyone has any more keep em coming.

Scaring people shitless with a sound ... I suppose Trumpets of Jericho wouldn't sound quite right for a robot?

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Now we're talking! Sturmtiger, Jagdpanther, Königstiger (King Tiger) ... or even Maus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_VIII_Maus

We were thinking about the P1500 "Monster" but P1500 sucks as a name and Monster is too generic.

"Whilst the P1000 was being worked out on the drawing board, Krupp came up with an even bigger idea, and that was to develop a 1500 ton monster tank...the P1500. It would have an armor mantle of at least 250mm thick going up to 360mm with 220mm side armour and 150mm top armor plating."

Image

"It was designed to be armed with a super heavy duty 800mm Mortar gun similar to that used on the railway gun 'Dora'. Also two 150mm artillery cannon and an array of machine guns and anti-aircraft guns would be included into it.

The P1500 was destined to be powered by four U-Boat engines, possibly the MAN V12Z32/44 24 cylinder 8500hp design that would render a power output of 34,000hp."

You mean a joke as in unrealistic, or a joke as in this is made up after the war?
