Why isn't Canada more like the USA?
Re: Why isn't Canada more like the USA?
Um.. let me try to remember the lyrics to that Tragically Hip song
Bill Whatisname disappeared that summer
He was on a fishing trip..
The last goal he ever scored
Won the Leafs the cup
They didn't win another until 1962
The year he was discovered.
...1962?

Won the Leafs the cup
They didn't win another until 1962
The year he was discovered.
...1962?

I don't like the shape of her head. It's like a tadpole.

We both wiped out our indigenous population and we're both settled by the British--mostly. Really, we have the most similar cultures when compared to the rest of the world. So, there.
Re: Why isn't Canada more like the USA?
Facts: 'America' declared war on the indigenous people and committed mass genocide to claim their lands. Canada signed treaties with the indigenous people to settle their lands. Canada was actually mostly settled by the French, not the British. 'America' was mostly settled by the English, the Irish, and the Mexicans. Our cultures are about as similar as any English speaking nation is to another, which is to say superficially.
Re: Why isn't Canada more like the USA?
Uh no - there was nothing like the genocide in the US and many like the 6 nations never gave up their sovereignty. Land claims remain a work in progress. We were a destination for freed slaves as well. Why isn't Canada more like the USA?

We were settled by the French first, few British and a ton of Scots, Irish and Ukrainian just to mention a few immigrants.
Quebec is successfully French, Cajun is an oppressed French populace.
We are bilingual.
We are multi-cultural not a melting pot.
We ARE a very different culture - mostly on the positive column as much as Harpo is trying to mute that.

Fucking nonsense. Are you kidding?PordFrefect wrote:Facts: 'America' declared war on the indigenous people and committed mass genocide to claim their lands. Canada signed treaties with the indigenous people to settle their lands.
We were not "settled by the Mexicans." We were settled by the Spanish, the southern bits, like Florida, Texas and the southwest. Now, if you want to look to somebody "wiping out" indigenous populations, look no further than the Spanish and the Portuguese. Now, they knew how to commit a genocide.PordFrefect wrote: Canada was actually mostly settled by the French, not the British. 'America' was mostly settled by the English, the Irish, and the Mexicans. We are multilingual, with some states having English and Spanish both as official languages, an in Louisiana it's English an French. Nationally, the US has no national language at all, officially. Language, at present an historically, is a convention or custom here, an not something enforced by law. If a town, county or state has a population that needs signs or documents in another language, they are free to do so, and they often do.macdoc wrote:Why isn't Canada more like the USA?

We're both, as is Canada. The US has the Cajuns and Creoles in the south. Mexican in the southwest. More Puerto Ricans in the New York area than live in Puerto Rico. The New York metro area is a microcosm of multi-ethnic populations (with more than the population of all of Canada). Canada legislates many aspects of culture that would raise significant ire down here in the US. Cultural protectionism is a Canadian thing.macdoc wrote:

There was only one formal declaration of war by the United States against any Native American tribe. Can you name the tribe without Googling?
