My dad and his brother built a replica cannon mount from the ones on Old Ironsides. It was for a regular customer. They went aboard the USS Constitution, took measurements, and eventually met up with the ship's engineer, who shared some drawings with them.

They had a blast.
The green careening planet
spins blindly in the dark
so close to annihilation.

I loved the imagery of the canons rolling back from the blast, with ropes to keep them from flying off...

What was their business? cannon foundry is not something you used to be able to do in your garage.

No, no, they're carpenters (Dad's a GC, or was, before he retired.)
