I'm sure that most of the early European soaps made from tallow and lye were primarily for washing clothes rather than people...

Svartalf wrote:It wasn't their custom, but soap has been known since prehistoric times in the middle east.Blind groper wrote:History would not agree with you there.Svartalf wrote: Soap = animal fat + vegetable ash... easy to obtain after mastery of fire.
For example : the old time Romans did not have soap, in spite of having fire and a lot of very sophisticated stuff. They used to use human urine to wash clothes with (urine contains ammonia, which has a cleaning action).
Has it made it to Yerup, yet?

Actually, it has been found that hoipolloibites from the bulldrekian naturally generated soap to make their shell more polished and lustrous to seduce females.

I heard Cavemen bathed more often than the French.

That's likely, the bath has been given a death blow by the shower in this country.

Are the French up to an "every third day" frequency, yet?

Are Merkins still wasting 10 times more water and hygiene products than they need, just because they can?

Some plants can be used as a soap - Juniper berries for example, used at the right time of year can be used to clean hands, etc.
Hunter/gatherers - Could very likely have used dogs. A documentary I saw about modern hunter/gatherers in S America (can't remember the name of the tribe now) had two smallish dogs which just turned back up at the camp with blood around their mouths. All the "hunters" had to do was follow the dogs back to the kill (in this case a 200lb pig) and pick it up...A virtually free feast for the whole tribe.
Edit - Not S American...Papua....And they were called the Kombai.

Two smallish dogs killed a 200 lb pig? That's impressive. It's unlikely even. Maybe it was sick.JacksSmirkingRevenge wrote:Some plants can be used as a soap - Juniper berries for example, used at the right time of year can be used to clean hands, etc.

I tried to find a clip but all I could come up with was this one which shows a type of wallaby after 06:36.
I think I must have my clips mixed up in my memory, or something.
Anyway, same principle but with smaller prey.

PS - I don't know if you watched Tribe, but I would highlt recommend the whole series.
