The best you can say is that, in war, the death toll was low, due to their [the Maoris'] own lack of technology and
warfare ineptitude.
Nasty, yes. Civilised, no.
You might want to give the good news to all the British soldiers who died fighting them during the Land Wars.
as for the "Top Ten Most Terrifying Civilizations". Well, any civilization/culture/empire had to be nasty to make it to the top (and probably still does), so the idea of a top ten is pretty naff.

Which was
after they got muskets. Kind of a game changer.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

No Sparta...they threw weak babies into a pit outside of town. We have them to thank for dumpster babies.

That part was historically inaccurate as with the other 99.99999% of the movie.

And why isn't the Merkin Empire on that list?

Yeah, I wondered about the Viking "Empire" too. They were never fully unified. I think they should have just referred to it as the Viking civilization.
The Celts were completely un-unified too. They spent as much time fighting each other as they did the Romans.
Celts are still the same. Sadly, sadly, Scots Gaelic is going to die out, and in large part that's because so many of its native speakers haven't been able to agree on how to save it.
But, as long as we beat the English we don't mind.
Wales dun good at the weekend.

Makes me laugh that the nazis are towards the top of the list. If you have the whole of human history to play with they were a bunch of pussycats
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Of course you're right Svarty, but I'm pragmatic enough not to mind paying the publican to enhance my euphoria in such moments!

The Spartans had swords and shields. The rest is very iffy. Like the ephors, who were elected for one year terms. That bit in the movie was just to get some boobies out.
